The mdý College Lynch School of Education and Human Development is proud to announce the publication of The Principal’s Legal Handbook, a comprehensive guide to education law co-edited by Associate Professor Raquel Muñiz.
The Principal’s Legal Handbookis the seventh edition of a meticulously researched work that combines Dr. Muñiz’s legal expertise with her passion for advocating educational equity. The new release canvasses key legal and policy topics that impact educators and school administrators on a daily basis.
“The world of education law is rapidly changing. Coming together with my co-editors and the authors who are leading in research, policy, and practice was important to me, given the timeliness of these issues. ”
This edition draws on experience and expertise of over sixty scholars and practitioners, providing readers with context around important recent legal changes affecting schools, and helping to translate the law for education professionals without a legal background. Each chapter in this new edition highlights critical issues and provides practical recommendations, followed by listings of cases and keywords discussed in the chapter.
With an enhanced focus on equity, the addition of new innovative teaching tools, and insights from scholars, lawyers, and practitioners,The Principal’s Legal Handbookserves as a resource for both aspiring and current principals and school administrators.
“Principals are leading in a time when they are often asked to do more with fewer resources, as well as having to navigate political polarization,” says Dr. Muñiz. “The Handbook offers a discussion of how these contemporary demands and pressures intersect in time-worn areas: funding, curriculum, employment decisions, serving linguistically-diverse students, etc.”
Dr. Muñiz’s research focuses on the intersection of education, law, and policy. Specifically, she seeks to inform educational equity discourse and scholarship through racial equity-centered work. Her research examines oppressive power structures, finds strategies to disrupt them, and empowers students of color to respond to these structures and counter deficit narratives.
