The cross is one of the most prominent symbols of Christianity, and depictions of the crucified Christ are one of Christianity's most powerful iconographic themes. And yet, it is only recently that greater attention has been given to the manner in which New Testament manuscripts provide important insight into the visual history of early Christianity. This lecture considers the staurogram as a specific example of the significance of New Testament manuscripts as a canvas for the visual culture of early Christianity.聽
