Mary Sherman

Part-time Faculty, Studio Art

Profile

Mary Sherman鈥檚 background includes a strong academic training, primarily, in painting from the Smithsonian Institution鈥檚 National Portrait Gallery and classes with Erich Huber of the Hochschule f眉r Angewandte Kunst, Vienna. More recently, though, her work has evolved beyond the canvas into time and space with kinetic installations, often, inspired by paintings. For this work, she uses technology (micro-processing, robotics, computational devices, scientific data and the like) alongside the emotionally fraught materials of fine art media, turning static installations into immersive, experiential performances that compose 鈥 and, then, alter 鈥 the architecture in which they are installed. 聽Along with her art work, she is also the founder and director of the international non-profit arts organization TransCultural Exchange, the former interim Associate Director of MIT鈥檚 Art, Culture and Technology program (ACT) and a curator and art critic with over 30 years of broad, in-depth, and diversified experience in the arts and humanities.聽 (See below.)
